Dr Leticia Labriola from Fibers365 GmbH, a QUIPACK partner, presented part of the work carried out within the project at IFIB2026, the International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy in Rome.
As an invited speaker, she delivered the presentation “Circular and Sustainable Fibers, Lignin and Biopolymers from Annual Plants”, exploring how plant biomass can provide resources for bio-based materials, including alternatives to fossil-based raw materials used in packaging.
The presentation highlighted Fibers365’s SteamFiber process, which uses heat, pressure and gentle grinding to process lignocellulosic biomass without harsh chemicals. Alongside natural fibres, the process generates purified lignin and feedstocks for biotechnological applications, including the production of biodegradable biopolymers.
This work contributes to QUIPACK’s research into more sustainable packaging materials, combining the use of renewable resources with the performance required for practical applications.
